Healthy Packed Lunches

Choosing healthy packed lunches for school doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few simple ideas, you can help your child feel energised through the school day while also making lunch times more enjoyable. Aim to include a balance of foods such as fruit and vegetables, a starchy option (like wholemeal bread, wraps, or wholegrain crackers), and a protein source (such as cheese, beans, eggs, tuna, or lean meats). Adding a small portion of dairy (like yoghurt or milk in a suitable container) can also help support growing bodies. If you’re not sure what to pack, start with familiar favourites and build on them gradually.

To make lunches easier to prepare and better for busy mornings, plan ahead and keep variety in mind. Batch cook items like pasta, chicken, or chickpea salad at the weekend, and use them in different ways during the week—such as in wraps, pitta pockets, or as a pasta pot. Try swapping sugary snacks for healthier options like fruit, carrot sticks or yoghurt.  With a little planning and the right choices, you can pack lunches that are both nutritious and practical for Horton Mill Community Primary.
