Horton Mill Community Primary School

Year 6

Welcome to our Year 6 class page.

Dear families,

Your teachers this year will be myself (Miss Lake) and Miss Hussain.

Our class entrance is on the KS1 playground. You will see myself or Miss Hussain at the door. If you ever need to speak to us, just say hello in the morning! If you need a longer conversation with one of us, just let us know and we can arrange a time.

Important information

We have a P.E lesson on a Tuesday and a Wednesday so your child will need to come to school in their P.E kit. They need to wear:

  • a white top
  • black shorts or black jogging pants
  • plain trainers
  • a black jumper or jacket
  • If your child wears a scarf, they need to bring a sports scarf in for their active sessions.

Our learning this term

English: We will be developing our reading and writing skills through a range of engaging texts and activities. We will explore the book ‘Holes’ and write letters and reports linking to the novel.

Maths: We will focus on securing our arithmetic skills and develop our understanding of place value and the four operations.

Other Subjects: We will also be enjoying a range of learning experiences across different subjects such as learning about North America in Geography, electricity in Science and painting landscapes in Art!

Home learning

Regular reading at home is extremely important in Year 6. Your child will be expected to read at home at least 3 times a week and get their reading record signed by an adult. This will be checked on a Tuesday and for every 3 reads, they get one raffle ticket to win a reading prize at the end of the half term.

Children are also expected to go onto Arithmagicians 3 times a week (https://arithmagicians.com/) and Spelling Shed (https://www.spellingshed.com/en-gb/) 3 times a week. Regular and consistent practice will allow your children to make progress. They will receive their new log in information.

Parent information session on Thursday the 10th of September. The session will begin at 8:55 and end at 9:30.
