This half term our big question has been ‘Why should the rainforest be important to us all?’. We have learnt about where we would find rainforests in the world and why we depend heavily upon them. We have learnt about the consequences of deforestation and how we have a responsibility to protect the rainforest. Early in the half term we had a very exciting visit from some rainforest animals. We learnt about their habitats and we considered adaptations that help the animals to survive. Everyone was incredibly brave and most people touched or held a python, a gecko, a millipede and a cockroach!
In Literacy we have written discussion texts to give our opinion about our big question. We have developed our use of connectives and we have put our new vocabulary to good use to make our writing powerful. In reading we are continuing to develop our understanding of how to understand new words from the context. We have asked and answered some amazing questions which we posed about the books we have read. We have particularly enjoyed reading ‘The Vanishing Forest’ because we thought about the impact of deforestation on the indigenous tribes. We are also reading a very exciting adventure story ‘The Explorer’.
In maths we have worked very hard on multiplying and dividing by 10,100 and 100. We have also learnt how to recognise 3D shapes from their nets and have measured angles more accurately. In our learning about fractions we became much more confident at converting mixed and improper fractions. We have also learnt about measuring volume and capacity accurately.
In science we have been learning about the properties of different materials. We have linked our learning with our topic and we have discussed which materials would be best thermal insulators to keep us warm in the rainforest. We have learnt about why we can’t drink seawater and about other soluble and insoluble substances. We thought about how we could make water drinkable by filtering, evaporating and condensing.
In ICT we have been using our rainforest topic to research information and pictures. We have used our information to create powerpoint slides which we will be using to help us to give a documentary-style presentation to others. We will be filming these presentations, so be ready for our celebrities!
In RE we have been considering the ruled we choose to live by and how we need to show respect and tolerance towards others with different viewpoints. In PSHE we have thought about how we are unique and we have the responsibility to protect ourselves and each other.
We are extremely proud of the children’s motivation and efforts this half term. Well done Year 5!
