Hi Year 5,
Welcome to half term 2!! This half term our Big Question is ‘Will we ever send another human being to the moon?’ Much of our learning will focus on science skills and we will be learning about the planets in our solar system and the phases of the moon.
In Literacy we will be writing a story based on the book ‘Leon and the Place Between.’ We will continue to develop our writing skills by including descriptive vocabulary and using a greater variety of sentence types.
In Maths we will develop our understanding of the 4 operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will also learn how to interpret graphs, charts and tables.
In ICT we will be using databases to sort and organise information. For art, we will be drawing in the style of artist Peter Thorpe.
In addition to this, we will learn about some of the most famous rivers in the world and why people choose to live by them.
Wednesday is PE day. On Wednesday children should come to school in their PE kits. This limits the items being brought into school.
On Friday we will be swimming (beginning 18th Sept 2020) All children will need to bring their kit in a bag on this day.
Boys: Swim shorts and a towel Girls: A swimsuit, towel and a swim hat
Year 5 Learning during periods of self-isolation
For each day that your child is at home self-isolating, they need to continue with their learning using the online resources listed below.
Please ensure that your child does this amount of learning every day. Your child will fall behind others in the class if they do not complete home-learning for every day they are still at home. (If your child is poorly they must rest).
Children have a home-learning book to complete their work in if needed
Reading (20 – 30 minutes) Online books available – Oxford Owl
Maths (about 1 hour) Online lessons available – Oak Academy
English (writing/grammar/handwriting/spelling) (about 1 hour) – BBC Bitesize / Oak Academy

Adults in our class:
We are very lucky to have lots of people supporting our learning!
On Monday – Wednesday your teacher will be Mrs. Clews and Wednesday – Friday your teacher will be Mrs. Meredith. We also have Mrs. Bibi who will be in our class every day. Mrs. Parveen, Miss. Shezadi and Mr.Smith will also be working with us.
Reading at home:
Children are encouraged to read at home for at least 10 minutes every night. They should only bring a book bag to school on Friday. Children can choose a book (or more than one) on Friday and return it to be changed the following Friday. This allows for 72hours before the books are used again.
All home-learning will be set using the Google Classroom. Children will be shown how to use this in school.
If there are any questions about using the classroom or the tasks they are set, please do not hesitate to ask.
I have set Google Classroom up. This means I can set lessons for you everyday that you have to complete and I will mark them. It is all done online and it will help us to learn as normally as possible!
Mrs Cook is sending a text to each of you today (31.3.2020) with your username and password. If you did not receive the text for any reason, please send Mrs Clews a message on the blog in Purple Mash or send an email to the school office with the email address below.

Here is some exciting news for you all. I have set us up with a class blog on Purple Mash. This will give you the chance to talk to me and to each other over the next few weeks. So, even if you can’t see your friends for a while, you can still talk to them safely here. Anything you post on our class blog has to be approved by me before it can be seen by others so please make sure that your comments are always kind. Once I approve them, everyone in our class will be able to see them.
The first thing I’d like you to do is simply to say hello so that I can check it is working for everyone. Here’s how to do that:
- Log into Purple Mash.
2. Select the ‘sharing’ icon at the very top of the page (this looks like a globe)
3. Select the ‘shared blogs’ tab. Then select the ‘class 5 blog’.
4. Click on the green + icon at the top right-hand side of the screen.
5. Add your comments to the title, summary and content boxes and click ‘save’. It’s ok is this is simply a hello for now.
Your comments will be sent to me first for approval. I will do my best to check and approve comments at least once everyday.
I hope that you will all start blogging soon so that you can keep in touch with your friends and me. We should be able to think of some fun ways of using this blog while we can’t come into school. If you have any suggestions, add them to your post.
Take care and I can’t wait to get your first posts.
