Welcome to the summer term in Year 5! This half term our big question will be ‘Do all plants and animals start life as an egg?’
Literacy: We will be writing descriptive and explanation texts linked to our big question. Our class text is ‘The Nowhere Emporium’. This term we will use our reading and writing skills to expand our vocabulary, deepen our understanding of character’s personalities, behaviour and motives and to develop our use of different sentence structures within a fiction and non-fiction writing.
Maths: We will revise our understanding of place value and read, write, order and compare numbers to at least 1,000,000 determining the value of each digit. We will compare and order fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same number. Also, we will solve problems involving converting between units of time and round decimals with two decimal places to the nearest whole number and to one decimal place. We will read, write, order and compare numbers with up to three decimal places and solve addition and subtraction multi-step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why. We will recognise and use square numbers and cube numbers.
Topic: We will learn about how animals depend on each other for survival, lifecycles, interviewing documentary makers and creating presentations and artwork to reflect our learning.
Science: We will investigate how plants grow and reproduce.
ICT: we will be further developing our programming skills using code to make a variety of things happen and to debug algorithms and solve problems with coding.
R.E and Pshe and Citizenship: We will research which religions are represented in our local community and compare the similarities and differences between these faiths. We will also consider the need for responsible behaviours towards ourselves and others.
We look forward to seeing all the wonderful learning from the children this half term.
