Playground Improvements

Welcome to our fantastic playgrounds at Horton Mill!

Last year, we looked at ways to improve children’s play experiences at play-time and lunch-times. There has been significant investment in a wide range of exciting and innovative outdoor equipment and resources of which we are extremely proud.

Our equipment develops a wide range of physical activities, building up skills from Nursery to Year Six in a progressive and challenging way.

Foundation Stage

Nursery – ‘Hector’s House’ encourages climbing in different ways because of its cargo net, small climbing wall, ladder and slide.

Reception – ‘Pick Up Sticks’ encourages climbing and balance as children manoeuvre across a series of large beams, posts and ropes. There is also a cargo net and slide.

Key Stage One

Our ‘Rope Tunnel’ encourages climbing, balancing and movement in a range of creative ways.

‘Wacky House’ is a large construction that encourages children to climb, balance and move in different ways. There is a balancing beam, ladder, climbing ramp, a viewing platform and large slide.

Our stunning ‘Outdoor Classroom’ is a special area that can be used for those children who wish to sit and relax with their friends. There is a seated area for up to 30 children and an additional eight place picnic bench used for activities in warmer weather. This area has been surrounded by artificial grass so it can be in use all year round.

Our wonderful ‘Sail Shade’ is a large 8m by 8m sail canopy that shelters children from the rain on miserable days and shades children from the sun on really hot days!!!

Key Stage Two

Our ‘Multi-Use Games Area’ is a large 25m by 12m specially fenced area where children can participate in a wide range of sports including: football, basketball, netball and cricket.

‘Athletics Track’ – We have a fantastic four lane 25m athletics track for those children who wish to practise jogging, sprinting, hopping, jumping or racing skills.

‘Adventure Trail’ – We have a fabulous 11 piece Adventure Trail where children can practice a whole range of physical activities and skills. Items include: Balance Beams, a Scramble Net, a Rope Crossing, a Step Log, a Wobbly Plank, a Rickety Bridge, Walk and Stretch Posts, a Climbing Wall and a Rock and Roll Log Crossing.

All climbing equipment is surrounded by either soft surfacing or special grass matting for additional safety.

All playground areas have had additional security fencing erected around them to ensure all areas are safe.
